Wind Mitigation Inspection Prep Sheet
What the inspector will look for, what documents to have ready, and where to find your last permit history.
A wind mitigation inspection takes 30 to 60 minutes. Showing up with the right documents in hand lets the inspector credit every feature your home actually has. Don't leave money on the table because a paper was buried in a drawer.
What the inspector will document (OIR-B1-1802)
- Building code year (often the year of last full re-roof)
- Roof covering (product type and Florida product approval)
- Roof deck attachment (nail size, spacing, length)
- Roof-to-wall connection (toe-nailed, clipped, single wrap, double wrap)
- Roof geometry (hip, gable, or other)
- Secondary water resistance (sealed underlayment, yes/no)
- Opening protection (shutters, impact glass, garage door rating)
Documents to have ready
- Last roof replacement permit (with final inspection)
- Shingle/tile/metal manufacturer specs showing wind rating
- Florida product approval numbers for roof and openings
- Window installation permit (if windows were replaced since the original build)
- Garage door NOA (Notice of Acceptance) and wind rating
- Shutter product approvals for any storm shutters installed
- Photos of installation if available (deck nailing pattern, secondary water barrier, roof-to-wall straps)
Where to find these documents
Permit records. Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Hernando counties all maintain online permit lookups by parcel ID or address. A quick web search for "[county] building permit lookup" finds the right portal.
Florida product approvals. Search at floridabuilding.org. The product approval number is usually a small number stamped on the product (e.g. "FL12345-R5"). Manufacturers can also email you the current approval document if you provide the model.
Notice of Acceptance (NOA). For Miami-Dade approved products (used statewide in coastal projects), look up the NOA number at miamidade.gov.
Day-of-inspection prep
- Clear attic access (no boxes in front of the hatch)
- Keep pets contained
- Make sure the inspector can access the garage interior
- Unlock or have keys for any storm shutter locks
- Be home, or arrange remote permission for attic and garage access
After the inspection
- Submit the completed OIR-B1-1802 form to your insurance agent
- Confirm in writing that discounts are being applied at next renewal
- Save the inspection report; it's good for up to 5 years
- Schedule the next one before the current report expires
